JUPITER, Fla. (CBS12) — A 69-year-old man died Thursday while diving near the Jupiter Inlet, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said. When PBSO Marine Unit deputies arrived, scuba divers from the dive boat Republic VII were found recovering John Masterjohn’s body, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies learned that the diver was diving in about 80 feet of water with a buddy when he became “distressed.” Both divers returned to the surface, but Masterjohn descended again, apparently unconscious. The boat captain placed a distress call with the U.S. Coast Guard, as scuba divers from the dive boat searched for diver, the sheriff’s office said. Masterjohn was found about two hours after he was last seen, laying dead on the bottom near where he was last seen by his dive buddy. An autopsy will be performed to determine the actual cause of death.
